#UTOPiAlove GoFundMe Blog Hop

As many of you know, I’m a four year veteran and a HUGE fan of UTOPiAcon – the book conference that takes place every June in Nashville. This year was beyond epic, and I’m still buzzing from all the positivity, information, and inspiration. And I can not wait for June 2016 to attend the FIFTH anniversary.

As we jump into this anniversary year, we want to give back to the organizers who have given so much inspiration and support to us. A conference of this magnitude–of this level of MAGIC–is valuable, and also expensive to produce properly.

Utopia has been the birth place of so many books, partnerships, blogs, teams, and friendships. It so genuinely enhances the lives of it’s attendees, but – even more importantly – it helps authors and bloggers bring great things into the world.

So we wanted to share a little of that with YOU!

Without Utopia I would never have…

That’s the fifteen second version. For lots more reasons, check out this blogtalk radio interview I did with the fabulous Jo Michaels. And check out the other folks on this bloghop to learn about the many ways Utopia changed their lives for the better too.

Over the past few months, we’ve learned that organizers, friends, and even family have come forward and given from their own personal funds in order to help move Utopia forward another year and we want to pay them back. We want to FIGHT FOR OUR WRITE and do our part to help.

So if you’ve ever been touched by Utopia, or if you love any of the authors, bloggers, or readers who have, please take a moment to give a few dollars. This will insure the inspiration continues.

We hope you’ll be led to give from the heart, but to sweeten the deal we have some MAJORLY EPIC incentives! In addition to what you’ll get from the Go Fund Me organizers (see the donation page to read about those), you’ll also get entered to win any one of these amazing raffle prizes listed in the rafflecopter below!

Prizes like these:

2 1

There is no purchase or donation necessary to enter to enter the drawing, but we encourage you to give even just $10 in order to help move us toward our big goal. And don’t forget, every donation of at least $10 earns you free books!

How to enter:

  1. Go visit #UtopiaLove’s Go Fund Me page and make a small donation (this isn’t necessary, but we would be so jazzed if you did this first! AND this earns you an automatic prize based on your donation level. Check your email to collect.)
  2. Click through any one of the rafflecopter entry methods. Complete the necessary item and get entered for all of the raffle prizes listed below.
  3. Click through to the list of other participating authors & bloggers to read how Utopia has changed them!

That’s it! Thanks!

My UtopYA2014 – part of an “unofficial” blog hop

This past June was my third trip to Nashville for the incredible UtopYA con, the best writers conference I’ve had the pleasure to attend. I went in 2012 as an aspiring author and a panelist because the founder Janet Wallace was one of the first friends I made when I became a writer. I wrote YA, read YA and loved the concept she had developed. I came away  with 80 new and amazing “paranormal” friends, writers and bloggers who became my biggest supporters.

In 2013, I went back as a published author and panelist. I had my first book and even sold and signed a few copies, which I would have never done with out that community, and the support continued way past the conference as I constantly watched and learned new ways to grow with my new friends.

But the year clicked by and suddenly UtopYA 2014 came super fast!  I went filled with gratitude as an Awards nominee, and a panel moderator! But my heart was heavy with the knowledge that I hadn’t made my biggest goal:  getting the sequel to CLICKS out as I had intended. As every writer knows, when the words flow, and the books are well received, we’re on top of the world. But when the opposite happens, it feels crushing. I worried that the conference was going to be a bust for me, but it wasn’t. Thanks to a StandUp Indies class I had taken with Janet and other members of the community, I was able to focus on what I had accomplished, and I went with the vow to make the most of the weekend, to inspired, invigorated and all the important things that UtopYA has done for me since year one.

And amazingly enough, it worked!  The proof is in the pictures, the memories, the new readers and friends. I had a table with Delphina Henley, hosted a panel on tackling World Issues in books that featured Chanda Hahn, Elizabeth Kirk and Magan Vernon and got to do the Friday night fan invasion with Rebecca Ethington. And Saturday I attended the awards ceremony and had a blast hearing my name called with all the other amazing nominees.  In the past month I’ve gotten to relive so many amazing memories, and I’ll do a separate post with some of the highlights. But the impact of UtopYA is present for me every day In the new things I’ve done for my business and myself since coming home, in the way I’ve stayed connected with people who became so important to me in such a short time. I’m so filled with gratitude that I’m  a part of this community. I have so many incredible people in my life, all of whom I’ve met over these three day weekends that are so very powerful, the impact lasts all year.

In 2015, I have some new friends – people I work with online but have never met – coming to meet at the first time in Nashville. We’re all there to meet and learn and connect. Now I just need to cross my fingers that I get to panel again, and hope to get off the waiting list for the Exhibitor space in time. I have faith though, because that’s what UtopYA is about: things that work out in a way that seems all most predestined. Because as writers, we always have the power to write our own future, and my friends and family from UtopYA are always here to help remind me of that every day between now and June of 2015.

This blog is part of a HOP with lots of great UtopYA friends. There are amazing prizes and things to win. Check here for more details daily:

BREAKS – Revealing New Covers and Other Things

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000030_00050]

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000030_00050]

Here’s the cover for BREAKS, book three in The Dolphin Prophecy novels.  What do you guys think? Isn’t it lovely and shiny and perfect? Every time I look at it, it just wrecks me, which is kind of the point, especially when you see it next to the other two. No really, check it. I’ll wait. It’s seriously that great.

Three covers

BREAKS, aka book three, in the series is a crazy fun whirlwind of a mess that has the Pinhold twins globetrotting to places they never could have imagined. Book three was crazy, fast and fun to write.

At this point, you would be right to wonder….book three? Am I behind? What happened to ECHOES? Did I miss something? And my answer to that would be no. You haven’t missed anything. I have.

I’d been warned about the sophomore slump before, and about the impossible nature of first sequels. The idea itself is an oxymoron, and book two has really put me through the ringer. Kaleb demanded more air time, Gram had important secrets to share, and by the end of book two, nothing in Cami’s life looks familiar anymore. And, because book number three was easier, it forced bunches of edits in book number two, and I can only beg patience from all of you and pray you’ll still be excited when it leaves my nervous, nails hands, because the changes really do make the story better.

But getting it all in there, and making sure middle book links between one and three properly – well, it’s been torturing me for months, keeping me up for weeks because deadlines are important and terrifying! When I do sleep, I wake up choking, like I’m drowning. The good news is, it’s getting better.  I know because sometimes, I can sleep and I only wake up that way a few times per week now.

ECHOES is close and I’m just triple checking that everything important is in there before formatting, (again.) My key focus is making sure everything needed is in there. And even though we could be talking minutes, or days, I’m not going to give an exact time for release. You’ll know when I share the links, and when I do, I hope you’ll help me share them with everyone else. Trust me, when ECHOES is out, I will be shouting from the rooftops, Facebook and ever single social platform.

Regina Wamba

In the meantime, we’re celebrating other things. Like the cover of BREAKS, and how grateful I am to get to work with Regina Wamba on this series. She totally gets my vision, and with each new cover she takes the visuals a hundred steps further than I could ever imagine. She’s tireless in her passion and her perfectionism, and you can really see it. I’m so grateful to Nazarea and KP at Ink Slinger PR for organizing a cover reveal, and to all of the bloggers who participated.

We’re also celebrating the fact that CLICKS is free and has been downloaded almost 10,000 times in a bit more thank a week, thanks to iBooks and Kindle both putting it into promotions.  That means many more readers looking to get ECHOES!  And we have a big rafflecopter going so you can win stuff. Keep checking it because I’ll be adding more prizes all month.

Lots of love and waves of gratitude to you all. TAEB image logo with text gradient longhe questions about when ECHOES is coming is the best motivation I could ever know. I’m so happy you guys want to spend more time with the people who live in my head because I love them so much, and I love you all too!

Are albino dolphins real?

Screen Shot 2014-06-29 at 7.00.23 PM
I get asked a lot of questions about the science in CLICKS, and where they blend from truth to fiction. Most often,  I start with a factual concept, and then, once it’s a part of the story, I embellish it to create drama and tension.

This is the first in a series of blog posts called SCIENCEorFICTION to answer these questions, and to help readers learn where the science in CLICKS starts, ends, and turns into fiction.

In the book, Cami befriends a white dolphin that looks different from all the others. At first, she thinks it’s a trick of her eyes. Then she realizes that in fact the dolphin is an albino that is part of Pinhold legends and her own history. It was half of the first set of twins that were born onto the island in forty years, and it was a blessing for Cami and her twin Mica, who were born soon after.

I wanted Cami to connect with a dolphin that stood out. In the first draft of the book, I made her look purple, but that wasn’t enough to really identify in the dark. Then I researched “White Dolphins” and learned a lot. There is a Chinese White Dolphin which is almost extinct.  There is the Amazon River Dolphin which looks whitish pink. But both of those locations are far from the California Coast where CLICKS takes place. So I wanted to find a dolphin that would be a more realistic fit.

Then I learned that albinism in nature was a real thing. Just like some people are born without pigment in their skin, dolphins can too.

Most recently, an albino made the news because it was captured in Tajii, Japan as part of the horrible annual dolphin hunts featured in the movie The Cove. They’ve named the dolphin Angel and I’ve named Cami’s dolphin Angel in the books to help raise awareness for the real angel and the terrible situation for dolphins that was famously exposed in the Academy Award winning documentary film The Cove.  Want to know more? Check out Sea Shepherd for information and ways to help.

migalooThere is also a well known albino whale named Migaloo that many call “The real Moby Dick.” He spends his time swimming off the  coast of Australia. He’s free and attracts whale watchers from all over. Let’s hope Angel can join him, at least in spirit, soon.

So, are albino dolphins Science or Fiction? SCIENCE! They’re incredibly rare but they do exist in nature.  If you want to learn more about Cami and her Angel, CLICKS is available for free for iBooks, Kindle, and Nook.

Echoes officially comes out next week. I apologize for all the delays, but as some of you have heard, Kaleb was rather unsatisfied with the size of his role, and he had a lot of things be wanted to say before the book could be finished. But, since he was right, and he did need to be around more, the book is much better because if his insistence. You’ll be getting more Echoes all next week so stay tuned here.

IUntitled design (8)n the meantime, let’s go back to celebrating what a year means. That’s 365 days of celebrating and selling and learning, reviews, endless giveaways and promotion opportunities. There are some other numbers that are significant this year for Clicks and me. I love that I get to spend my days creating stories and sharing them with the world. And I  in the sandbox of the constantly changing independent publishing industry. This community of authorpreneurs (not my word but it’s perfect don’t you think?) has been so welcoming and supportive, and I can honestly say I wouldn’t have made it through all this time without the other writers, bloggers and readers I’ve met. They inspire me everyday to write more, read more and deliver better stories. Waves of gratitude go toy husband, kids, our parents and other friends and family members who have supported this adventure and to everyone who has helped get this book into the hands of readers. And thank you most of all to those of you who have given CLICKS your time and attention. I hope you’ll like ECHOES just as much, or even more!

The Write Path – a letter to myself

small typewriter

venice beach, dolphin, palm tree, beach, photograph, la, venice, signs

It was fifteen years ago this week that I moved to NYC from LA. I know because it was Fleet Week and I arrived to a city filled with hot men in white pants. In LA, I had a job with a big talent agency, but I’d come to the conclusion that I needed to be talent, not management. Admitting that I wanted to be on the other side of the desk terrified me, but so did staying trapped in a dream that didn’t fit.

So I decided to move to New York to be with my boyfriend (now husband,) and closer to my family in Maryland, hoping it would feel ok to be a writer there. And it did.  I began whispering stories to people. Every time I did, an opportunity popped up. This is a lesson I’ve had confirmed over and over since then. Carrie Butler and PK Hrezo asked a bunch of us to write letters to our younger selves to celebrate her blogoversary.  So here is my letter to me.

1999Dear Amy,

This year you’re going to party like it’s 1999. You are going to find your “write life.” So listen up. There’s a reason you’re on this planet. And you haven’t started doing it yet. You ARE a storyteller. Denial won’t change that. Stop hiding your dreams in the closet and get on with it. So…

WRITE. Just sit down and do it, first thing, every day. All the stories in your head are much better on paper, and when you are writing, all the issues and doubt will disappear. Otherwise the words will crowd your heart and your head. Start every story that’s in your heart, and finish some of them. Go…

hnt_01TELL PEOPLE WHAT YOU ARE WORKING ON. Only your parents will laugh. They’ll remind you that when you were a little tiny kid, you sat around writing stories, and didn’t do much else. Evan will take a story idea that you whisper to him on a long car trip, pitch it to a new media producer and an internet incubator and you guys will start a company based their interest. When people ask what you’re working on, they’re genuinely interested when you tell them. And…

IF THEY ASK TO SEE IT, SHOW IT TO THEM. Immediately. Because they’re excited about, they’ll understand that it’s still in a draft mode. They’re really going to like it, want to see it again when it’s finished, and they may even have a bit of advice. Don’t wait until it’s perfect because it never will be. And their energy will have diminished, and you’ll have to work much hard to capture it again. Just…

small typewriter

FINISH THINGS. Wrap projects up, put them down. Edit, create a clean copy, and make a plan. Keeping them hidden in your computer is almost worse than never having written them at all. Expand your ideas about delivery platforms beyond books, TV and movies and you will actually create new platforms for your stories. Don’t limit your ideas to books Take…

A CLASS OR TWO. You need the deadlines, structure and feedback for editing. But don’t get stuck in the process for too long. Incorporate the feedback you like immediately, ignore the rest and keep moving the project forward. And you will meet amazing people who will stick with you for the rest of your life. It’s magical to have friends who already know your dreams. They’ll encourage you, understand you, get you back on track if they need to and celebrate even the smallest successes. Always…

TRUST YOUR INTUITION. Especially when it comes to people and opportunities. You know which ones will carry you forward and which will not. Do not question your instincts, or feel guilty about them. You see things that others do not, and come up with unique and creative connections. This is ultimately what will drive you to create stories that only you can tell, the stories only you can share with the world. Remember…

The Penthouse Clocktower in DUMBO Brooklyn at Sunset

TIME IS DIVINE. You can reject the desk job mentality, and spend your days doing work that inspires you and is productive. Interesting opportunities will always come your way if you stay optimistic and open minded. And go marry that boy already. You guys make dreams come true for each other and your babies are going to be adorable. And lastly…

PUT YOUR STORIES FIRST. There will be plenty of distractions, many will even be essential to creating the career you want. But make the creative writing time the most important tentpole of every day. Make storytelling sacred, because that is truly the part that only you can do.

With love and light,

Future You
